The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning of strong winds across parts of Devon during this evening and overnight.

Gusts of 50-60mph are expected, with isolated gusts of 65-70mph in exposed locations.

Forecasters say the westerly wind will become north-westerly by Tuesday morning, and although easing for a time, it will become very gusty through the day, particularly near showers.

The public should be aware of the risk of localised damage from these winds and for minor disruption to travel.

The warning is valid until 7.30pm tomorrow (Tuesday).

A Met Office chief forecaster said:  “A deepening area of low pressure will move east across northern Scotland during Monday evening, bringing strong westerly winds to many parts of Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, England and Wales with gales and locally severe gales in places.

“A focus for some particularly gusty winds may be adjacent to the Bristol Channel coast during the early hours of Tuesday.

“A cold and showery northwesterly airstream will become established for Tuesday, with powerful gusts in and near showers, particularly over Northern Ireland, southwest Scotland and Northern England.”

Regional forecast for the next five days:

Today:
Some early brightness, especially for in the east, before cloud thickens from the west. Rain and strong winds will then spread eastwards by the afternoon, turning heavy and persistent across the hills. Gales, severe along the coast, likely by dusk. Maximum Temperature 13C.

Tonight:
Very windy, with gales, locally severe. Evening rain will soon clear east, with clearer spells following. However isolated blustery showers are possible during the early hours. Feeling cold. Minimum temperature 6C.

Tuesday:
Staying windy, with gales likely throughout. There will be sunny spells, variable cloud and isolated blustery showers. Remaining cold, especially in the brisk winds. Maximum temperature 11C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:
Winds easing Wednesday, but remaining strong with sunshine and scattered showers. Early brightness possible Thursday, before rain spreads gradually east. Rather cloudy, with outbreaks of rain Friday.
