Are you hoping to switch careers this year? Whether you have just graduated from university or are getting tired of your current career and feel that a change is in order, it’s good to know which jobs are the most sought-after and the ones where you will have to face more competition thanks to a high level of demand.

We’ve listed some of the industries and jobs that are facing the most demand for this year and why they are so hugely popular. If you’re hoping to land one of these jobs, it’s good to know exactly what employers are looking for in applicants in order to gain edge over your competition.

Investment Firms

Investment firms are becoming more and more of a popular place to work. For example, Fisher Investments UK has been voted one of the best places to work in the UK, largely thanks to the level of job satisfaction which employees gain from working there and a good selection of employee benefits. With the economic industry set to improve, jobs in investment firms and day trading have definitely grown in demand. Not only that, but with more and more people choosing to invest and trade as a method of making a primary or secondary income, more jobs in investment are being created to deal with growing client bases.

Engineering

Engineers are set to be highly sought after for this year, with mechanical engineers coming in at the most highly paid, earning £50-60k annually depending on experience. As the demand for engineers grows, even those industries which have not usually required engineering professionals in the past are creating job opportunities for those qualified and experienced in the field. In order to support new and innovative technologies, we can expect to see an increase in engineers being hired in industries such as healthcare and entertainment.

Human Resources

As workplace environments become more increasingly complex, more and more companies are taking on HR professionals with more specific skills in order to put them in a better position to cope. HR professionals with a broad base of knowledge have and will continue to always be in very high demand, however changes in workforce management have brought about an increased need for specialised HR personnel who display expertise in critical matters such as talent acquisition and retention and workforce engagement.

Information Technology

As cyber-security becomes more essential and cybercrime and hacking becomes a very real threat, more and more business are taking on experienced IT professionals in order to ensure that their servers and data are secure. With cybercrime being described as a huge threat to even small businesses, it’s essential for companies of all sizes to ensure that they are best protected against it. As more complex issues related to the risk of cybercrime and compliance continue to grow, IT professionals with specialist skill sets are growing in demand.

Do you work in one of the above job roles? Or, are you currently in the process of applying for an in-demand job? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
