12-year-old girl critical but stable

A 12-year-old girl has been taken to Frenchay hospital in Bristol after being hit by a car in Newton Abbot yesterday afternoon. (Tuesday 17 December).

The girl, a pupil at Newton Abbot College, is in a critical but stable condition with a head injury.

The car is thought to have collided with the girl on Highweek Street at around 3.30pm while she was walking back from school.

The collision was witnessed by passersby including school pupils and the school will offer support to the children who witnessed the collision.

Weekend heatwave leaves two dogs dead and hundreds more suffering

The RSPCA has hit out at owners who left their dogs in hot cars over the weekend, despite repeated warnings about the dangers.

The animal welfare charity was inundated with hundreds of complaints over the weekend from people who spotted animals suffering as the temperature rocketed to 90 degrees in some parts of the country.

Around 350 calls about animals trapped in hot cars came into the RSPCA’s National Control Centre over the weekend of 6-7 July. Unfortunately the heat wave also claimed a number of lives.

Car collides with horse on the A380 on Telegraph Hill

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue were called to a road traffic collision on the A380, Telegraph Hill near to Ideford this morning.

One fire appliance was despatched to the incident from Exeter Danes Castle and one from Exeter Middlemoor.

On arrival crews found a single vehicle that had been involved in a collision with a horse. Fire crews report that nobody was trapped within the vehicle. Several horses were on the carriageway and were being looked after by police, whilst the casualties were being cared for by paramedics.

The St Loye’s Foundation car raffle, in which Princesshay shoppers have had the chance to win a Peugeot 107 for £1, has raised in excess of £10,000 for the Exeter-based charity. Downpours make journeys home difficult for drivers

Drivers faced a treacherous journey home after torrential rain caused flooding across Devon.

Fire crews were called to Copplestone to pump out flooded properties and many country roads were only passable with extreme caution.

The Environment Agency currently has flood alerts out for the following areas:

  • The Lower River Exe from Tiverton to Exeter, including Bickleigh and Stoke Canon areas
  • Hemyock, Cullompton, Stoke Canon, Broadclyst and Clyst St Mary areas

Woman rescued from car stuck in Cockwood Harbour

A woman has been freed from her vehicle, which got stuck in the mud during a rising tides after it went through a dwarf wall and ended up in Cockwood Harbour.

The vehicle hit a wall, flipped over, and landed on its wheels in Cockwood Harbour near Starcross, Exeter, Devon, at about 21:50 BST on Sunday. Fortunately for her and the two other passengers with her in the car, the harbour had no water in it at the time of the accident, but with rising tides time was of the essence for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service.
