Concern over smoking poverty link

New analysis from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) shows that more than 1.4 million households with a smoker are living below the poverty line.

The national data shows that, of the 5 million households in England that include an adult smoker, 1.4 million (27%) are below the poverty line, and an estimated 418,000 households could be lifted out of poverty if they quit smoking.

A new ‘Local Poverty Calculator’ launched today by ASH shows local councils how many households in their area have a smoker and are living in poverty.

Six new brightly coloured council homes set to providing sustainable and low energy housing for some of Exeter’s most vulnerable families.

New eco-friendly homes at Reed Walk, Newport Road will house six local families who have been waiting for a suitable place to live on Exeter’s Housing Register. The new three-bedroom homes, including one fully wheelchair accessible property, were completed in September.

Call for support to get first-time buyers on property ladder

The RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) is calling for more to be done to help young first time buyers better understand the process of buying a property, starting with increasing their access to knowledge of the local housing market.

A new survey carried out by Reeds Rains estate agents has found that in Britain, 47% of people take between 1-5 minutes to form an impression of a property which they are viewing while others take less than 30 seconds. The Exeter office of leading property consultancy JLL has been instructed to sell the Harrabeer Country House Hotel, Yelverton, an established business on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park.

Landlords offered licensing discount

Landlords of Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) are being offered £125 discounts for a licensing their properties if they sign up to an accreditation scheme.

The incentive comes as Exeter City Council and the University of Exeter actively attempt to drive up the standards of properties in the city for tenants.

Both the University of Exeter and the Students’ Guild are committed to promoting the AfS/Unipol Accreditation Scheme within the private sector housing market in Exeter.

Having a set place on the sofa and feeling comfortable enough to go to the toilet with the door open are what makes a house a home in Exeter, according to a new study.

It takes someone living in South West on average just under four months (14.5 weeks) before they believe their house has become a home and it is the simple things like having a knowing which draw everything is in which make all the difference.
