The Waxroom

Imagine Led Zeppelin playing Bee Gees songs with sponge guitars. That’s almost, but not quite entirely unlike The Waxroom” Occasionally Trousers Magazine

Following their Prague debut in 2007, The WaxRoom have established firm roots in the Southwest, delighting audiences with their mixture of power and poetry. Inspired by absinthe and driven by a love of melody, the Waxies take the post-punk pop song to new levels, by turns abstract and gritty, gentle and bruising. Like a steel fist in a velvet glove, Simon Pring’s effortless vocals soar, glide and swoop while Jez Taylor’s guitar meanders, squawks and thuds, Paul Bateman invents whole new songs on the bass and Tony Plato wraps it all in groovy, earthy rhythms. Three quarters of the band are ex-members of Jackdaw Music and the John Matthias band, and use their extensive touring and recording experience (inc. Radio 1, Radio 4’s Loose Ends) to deliver a finely crafted, yet edgy performance, all original and quite unlike anyone else you have heard. Influences range from REM to reggae, Radiohead to James Brown and all points in between.

To date, The WaxRoom have produced one album, Virtual Vinyl which is a fifteen-track showcase of the band’s numerous musical talents. The songs are a varied selection of favourites from the band’s live set, from the jaunty indie pop of “Sunbear” and “She’s in Love”, through the delicate beauty of “Drown” and “Listen”, to the two minute noise-pop blasts of “Who Said” and “Do Do Do”. Alongside these are grungier numbers like “Abstinence” and the krautrock chug of “Weave”. Across all of these are laid melodies that some tune-free chart acts would kill for; “No-one’s Listening”, for example, is a massive hit in waiting. A new set of songs is due to be released online before the end of 2013.

Lion The Weak

“Wonky indie pop, catchy and danceable with a downbeat edge.”

Jack Shepherd, a.k.a. Lion the Weak, blends the erratic pop of Fixers with the simmering chant of alt-pop bands like Among Brothers and more than a slight nod to early 80s synth pop. Revelling in repetition, exploding with electronics and, occasionally, forging a new genre out of all the indies, this is jaunty indie pop disco for the masses. Although Jack writes all of the compositions himself, Lion The Weak perform live as a four-piece band with a full and luscious sound, which also works very well in an acoustic format.
