Shop staff and volunteers at the Exeter British Heart Foundation (BHF) Furniture & Electrical store have thanked residents for their support over the past year by hosting a party and inviting the whole community. The party took place at the Exeter BHF Furniture & Electrical store on Cheeke Street yesterday.

Thanks to the Exeter community, BHF shops in Devon have raised £1,390,000 for the BHF over the past year. This staggering amount has enabled the BHF to fund 166 defibrillators, seven heart support groups and 26 health care professionals in the local area.

The Exeter Furniture & Electrical store held the free event, which was open to all, to thank residents for their volunteering hours, donations and purchases. Many party-goers brought bags of items with them to donate to the Exeter BHF shops.

Andy Dare, BHF Area Manager, added: “Everyone had a great time at the party on Wednesday 27th August and we’d like to thank everyone who came along. Hopefully they learnt a bit more about how their support of our shops helps the BHF as a whole.

“Quite often people don’t realise that the bed, sofa or television that they donate to the Exeter store actually raises vital funds and helps pay for anything from an echo machine in the local hospital to a community heart support group. We couldn’t fund this life-saving equipment or research in Exeter if it wasn’t for the local community.”

Around 116 people die from coronary heart disease (CHD) in Exeter every year, but with continued support from local people, the BHF can fight harder to reduce this figure. CHD is the UK’s single biggest killer, causing approximately 74,000 deaths in the UK every year1.

The Exeter Furniture & Electrical store is located at Cheeke Street, Exeter, EX1 2DD. All the money raised from the store will help the BHF fund pioneering research to continue its fight for every heartbeat. By gift aiding your donations, the BHF will raise more money from your unwanted things, and it’s completely free.

The Exeter BHF Furniture & Electrical store offers a free collection service that can be booked by calling 01392 330875 or, for larger furniture and electrical items, visit bhf.org.uk/free
