Newton Abbot Racecourse announces £1m prize money commitment for 2017

Following the Easter Saturday season fixture, Newton Abbot Racecourse has confirmed another record year of committed prize money for 2017.

Over the course of the 2017 season, over £1million in prize money will be spread across the 18 fixtures which will take place between April and October.

This year, the minimum amount of prize money on offer will be: £6,000 for all Class 5 hurdles, £6,750 for all Class 5 chases, £7,250 for all Class 4 hurdles and £7,500 for all Class 4 chases.

As part of the racecourse’s ongoing commitment to the grass roots of the sport, this year the racecourse will be offering a free two-course meal to all stable staff.

Continuing its support for all owners, Newton Abbot Racecourse will not charge an entry fee to race, which is a commitment now in its seventh year at the course.

Maintaining its pledge to offer the best racing experience for all who attend the South Devon course, further enhancements have taken place over the winter as part of Newton Abbot’s annual reinvestment programme.

This has included the completion of the third and final stage of improvements to the Parade Ring, the building of five new fences and the installation of five furlongs of new running rail.

Discussing the prize money commitment for 2017, Patrick Masterson, Managing Director at Newton Abbot Racecourse, said: “Once again we look to showcase our commitment with another record year of prize money.

“One of the highlights of our racing programme this year is our fixture on May 10 which will see a prize fund of over £90,000, including a Class 2 Handicap Steeple Chase with a prize fund of £22,100.

“This year will close with our fixture on Friday 13 October which includes a £30,000 class 2 Intermediate Chase and a £25,000 class 2 Handicap Hurdle.

“To protect the future of the sport, it is imperative that we continue to support the grass roots of the industry. We hope that our free meals initiative for all stable staff can help to make a difference to those that play such an important role in this thriving and well-loved sport.”
