Everybody needs good neighbours says South Devon care firm
A SOUTH Devon care firm is inviting anyone wishing to do more for their rural community to sign up to its good neighbours’ initiative to provide care in the area where they live (January 2018).
Guardian Homecare, which has offices in Exeter, is offering people the opportunity to train as a carer to provide services in their own hamlet or village.
Katie Jewell, Regional Manager for Guardian Homecare, said: “If a person has limited transport or wants to work closer to home, it can become difficult to find work, so we’re offering people interested in becoming a carer the opportunity to work in their own communities and not have to travel further afield.
“We have found that there are often people living in the same small, rural community as someone who needs care and support. Working in a close-knit community enables a richer relationship between the carer and the person supported, as they can have more in common and the carer can also pop in more easily.
“People who need our care services love to see a friendly face; having someone from their own community providing the care they need will help them tremendously. They will also trust a familiar face.
“Where this kind of match between the person needing support and the carer can be made, it also helps enormously with safety during the winter months, as locally based carers can almost always reach someone, even in poor conditions such as heavy rain or snow.”

“No experience is necessary to become a carer, as we offer free, full training, which includes a company induction, first aid, information on dementia, health and safety, food safety, infection control, handling medication and moving and handling service users, with the opportunity to achieve industry-recognised qualifications after the initial six months probationary period.”
New recruits are given free uniforms, access to national staff discount scheme for many major brands, as well as 28 days paid holiday, paid travel between calls and paid mileage.
Katie added: “Being dependable is key to this role as people will be looking after the needs of vulnerable adults. Applicants also need to be even tempered and caring and must enjoy making a positive difference to people’s lives.
“Being patient, able to cope with change and having the ability to display empathy and warmth are also essential. Candidates will need to have their own transport and mobile phone. We cover any costs incurred related to work.”
