Free Winter Safety Boxes still available
Following last week’s snowfall in parts of the county, the Travel Devon team is reminding workplaces in Exeter, Newton Abbot and Barnstaple that a limited number of FREE "Winter Safety Boxes" are still available.
Businesses in these communities have until Thursday 28 February to apply for a Winter Safety Box, which is worth £100 and contains essential equipment to help staff who walk and cycle during the winter months.
The Met Office recently received one of the boxes while hosting a Travel Devon event.
Met Office Environmental Advisor Kathy Gray said: “We are very pleased to receive the Winter Safety Box from Travel Devon and will be making the contents available to our staff to encourage cycling and walking to and from work. We are always pleased to host the Travel Devon Roadshow to inform our staff about public transport, cycling and walking as alternatives to using cars for their work commute.”
The Winter Safety Box includes high visibility jackets, puncture repair kits, emergency bike lights, umbrellas and area information to keep for emergencies or give to employees.
Encouraging employees to walk or cycle to work can help to boost morale, improve mental and physical health, and get staff motivated for the day ahead.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “The Winter Safety Box is a simple idea but it’s full of vital equipment and kit which could help pedestrians and cyclists with their commute over the winter months. The Travel Devon team is available to help local businesses with free support and can host events at workplaces."
There are only a few boxes still available, which can be claimed by:
• Signing up to the Travel Devon toolkit
• Signing up to the Travel Devon Business Newsletter via the link on the toolkit and
• Emailing traveltowork@devon.gov.uk to pledge to host a Travel Devon event between now and February 2019.
