The Song Cyclists: Singing for better mental health
The Song Cyclists, a group of five singers taking on an unprecedented challenge as they cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End giving a concert every evening along the way to raise £20,000 for the UK’s largest mental health charity Mind.
They will be singing at The Old Firehouse at 8pm on Thursday 19th July, performing a mixture of pop, folk and a cappella; entry is free with a retiring collection.
Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem and, shockingly, suicide is still the biggest killer of British men under 49.
Mind combats this through 135 local branches providing help for those in critical need, training for GPs, assistance with housing and benefits and, based on its research, campaigns to the government. As they travel the length of the country, The Song Cyclists hope to promote the work of Mind, an awareness of mental health issues, and the positive effects of music and sport.
Tenor William Searle said “We all met singing in the choir of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge and universities are under the microscope right now for not taking their students’ mental health seriously enough. Opportunities to enjoy making music and playing sport, coupled with a willingness to talk about mental health, whether that be with friends, tutors or health professionals, is essential for managing the academic stresses and the process of becoming an independent adult”.
