South West Highways Ltd (SWH) were pleased to host a visit from a number of students studying at Bicton College at their head office in Rockbeare on Wednesday 17th September 2014.

The students, who suffer with mild to moderate learning difficulties, were aged between 18- 24 and accompanied by a number of teachers from the college. The students are all currently studying a ‘Pathway to Employment’ course, which seeks to prepare them for future employment, whilst building confidence and developing invaluable skills.

A number of SWH staff from right across the business took the time to discuss their job roles with the students, sharing with them their career progression and how they came to work in the construction industry. The students were also given a tour of the office and its facilities, as well as a few promotional goodies at the end of their visit.

SWH were awarded National Skills Academy for Construction status in September 2013. Anna Cooper, SWH's Project Skills Coordinator, develops and nourishes this status, planning events such as this visit, which aims to inspire students to seek a career in construction in the future.

Anna said, "It was great to spend some time with the students from Bicton College teaching them about the firm and what various members of the team do on a day to day basis. This was a great opportunity for the young people to experience a real life construction site. This visit also provided an opportunity that perhaps normally wouldn’t be available to them. Visiting us allowed them to see and experience first-hand what it is really like to work in construction and also presented them with the different career routes that are now available. We look forward to welcoming the students back in the not so distant future'.
