Grimm Times for Silverton: Dark tales performed at starlit summer shows

SILVERTON’s summer bliss is set to be shattered as dark fairy tales take centre stage in the Mid Devon village.

Strange creatures, characters and much-loved names from the brothers Grimm will star in a series of stories performed outside by The Silverton Luvvies old and young – as a host of new stars will join the much loved troupe.

Using the backdrop of the village’s medieval church and performed in a magical garden, the 200-year-old German fairy tales will come alive for two nights this July as the players tackle a number of the well, and less well, known stories.

Silverton Luvvies director Portia Smith said the tales mark a new departure for the group and promise to be fun, if not a little scary and thought-provoking.

“Apart from our shows during the Silverton’s famous Street Market, we are normally on a traditional stage, so playing outside brings its own challenges,” she said.

“However, our al fresco stage and backdrop is a wonderful setting in the heart of this ancient village, which will bring more atmosphere to these dark tales as we bring them to life. The shows promise horror, fun and wonder, but don’t be surprised if you have the odd nightmare later!”

The audience is being encouraged to bring blankets and chairs to make themselves comfortable during the shows and make it a fun-filled family evening.

When: July 6 and 7, gates open from 7.30pm for 8pm show start.
Cost: Adults £5, children £3.
Tickets: will be available on the gate only.

There will be a bar available during the performances, which will be followed by a disco.

Local producers Exe Valley Brewery is sponsoring the production and will be supplying ‘fairy ales’ on the night!
