Theatre group seeks WW1 families
A theatre group in Devon is calling on local families to try and trace living relatives of soldiers who died in the First World War.
Six names are inscribed on Silverton’s war memorial and the Mid Devon village’s dramatic group are focusing on them for their next production.
This will be performed in February 2014 to mark the centenary of The Great War.
Silverton's Drama Group, The Luvvies, has been busy researching what village life was like during World War One as the basis to their play, which will be performed in the village’s Community Hall.
Director Portia Smith called on families in Devon to help them trace living relatives so the group can retell their memories and further remember those who gave their lives for the county and wider country.
“It would be wonderful to find out who these people were, their backgrounds and their stories,” said Portia.
“We know their names and that they came from the Silverton area in Mid Devon but if we could find out personal information, what they left behind and how relatives coped, it would really bring home the sacrifice that was made 100 years ago.
“If these names jog any memories, we would love to hear from you and we can then pay our respects more accurately.”
The Silverton Local History Society and the Devon & Dorset Regiment have been busy helping the group research the names and regiments, but personal information would further enhance the story.
“It's been a fascinating journey so far,” added Portia. “But we feel there are people living in Devon or maybe beyond who can add to our play.”
The group is looking for all stories, information and photographs about Silvertonians during the Great War.
In particular, it would like to make contact with any living relatives of six of the brave men named on Silverton War Memorial, so it can find out more to make its play historically accurate and seek permission to use their stories.
