Exhibition Barn

“Since 1969, the world has been a better place for donkeys” – Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, founder of The Donkey Sanctuary.

The Exhibition Barn is an introduction into the far reaching work of The Donkey Sanctuary.

Donkeys are a vital lifeline for communities around the world. Visitors can see exactly how they help people and what The Donkey Sanctuary is doing to improve donkey welfare, making sure their contribution to humanity is fully valued.

Discover donkeys through the ages by taking a look back 60 million years ago, and follow the story of the humble donkey. What were donkeys doing in Ancient Egypt? What did medieval people think kissing a donkey would cure? How has Dr Svendsen made a difference to the lives of donkeys since 1969?Find all these answers and more!

Step up to one of the UK’s largest spinning globes, to see a map of donkeys around the world. Find out just how widespread donkeys are, and the jobs they carry out to help mankind.

See what an actual mobile unit looks like, where The Donkey Sanctuary teams travel to remote locations to help improve donkey welfare. Climb aboard the vehicle and see the tools used to provide veterinary treatments and hoof care, and educational tools used to teach donkey owners how to handle and look after their donkeys better.

Another important role donkeys have, is the ‘teacher’. Donkeys are sentient beings, and can teach us a lot about ourselves, and help us on an emotional and psychological level. Learn how the charity promotes positive and rewarding human/donkey interactions and the mutual benefits it brings.

Dr Svendsen’s Hut – a tribute to The Donkey Sanctuary founder

Learn the story of much-loved founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen. Dr Svendsen’s Hut is a special place, situated within a butterfly garden in the exact location where her original summer house was. You can take a moment to read her story, and see some of her favourite pictures. Take a seat at the actual desk where she wrote the very first newsletters and many books over the years, all while listening to some of her favourite music.

Understanding Donkeys Zone

Donkeys and mules are at the heart of everything at The Donkey Sanctuary, and staff are so passionate about them. In the Understanding Donkeys Zone, visitors can learn everything they need to know about these wonderful animals.
