Blog: Student Life #10

One place arguably essential to student life, wherever you’re at university, is a good pub. I’m not a heavy drinker, I’m probably the lightest drinker possible to still be classes as a “drinker” so I don’t mean students need a good pub to get drunk, just to have a relaxed environment for socialising with friends.

The Victoria Inn, aka The Vic, can be found on Victoria Street; that’s not too hard to remember. With reasonably priced food and drinks, a friendly atmosphere and a location close to most student housing, it’s the ideal pub for students. The Ram on campus is okay but if you’re looking for a wider selection of food and a pub where you might even occasionally be able to sit down, The Vic is a brilliant choice.

My reason for visiting most recently was for a society social, it was the first stop on our pub crawl and a great place to start the evening. With a selection of large and small tables, we managed to fit everyone who came into the same area, with no awkward side tables left out of the conversation. Plus, I discovered that The Vic do regular quiz nights and events such as ‘Drink The Vic Dry’ which attract a good crowd.

With fairy lights all around the interior, The Vic is prettier than most pubs and the low wooden furnishings give it the same kind of charm as Devon Coffee. Amongst the usual tables and chairs, there’s a pool table and a TV for showing major sporting games, what more could you want?

A lemonade or a house coffee will cost you £2, beers and ciders a little more, and there are often promotions running on the food. If you’re on the hunt for an affordable pub that’s perfect for students then I’d definitely recommend The Vic.
