Blog: Student Life #4
One of the most brilliant things about Exeter is its openness to vegetarians and vegans. Now, I’m not saying it’s completely open and there are no harsh judgements, however in comparison to some of the other cities in the UK that I’ve visited, Exeter is far from the worst.
In fact, there’s a lovely little vegetarian and vegan café in the Cathedral yard called The Plant Café. I visited there once before for a chai latte and a slice of carrot cake but was keen to return and try the famous vegan chocolate cake. I should make this clear now, I’m a vegetarian, not vegan, yet was eager to find out if vegan cake could taste as good as vegans tell me it does.
I enjoyed a mocha and a generous helping of chocolate cake with my boyfriend who ordered a cappuccino. Both of us enjoyed the quality of The Plant Café’s cake – the day before we had visited Shauls bakery and the chocolate cake there couldn’t compete.
Although I am yet to have lunch at this charming café, I definitely intend to soon. There’s a wide selection of yummy-looking salads, vegan tarts, falafel and more. Plus, the selection of drinks sets this establishment apart from the competition around the cathedral. As well as the usual selection of hot drinks, The Plant Café have a fantastic selection of cold drinks including raspberry lemonade – who wouldn’t be tempted by that?
Being a vegetarian is a very large part of my life and it’s wonderful to visit a café that shares the same beliefs as myself – I am more than happy to spend my money on a business that promotes cruelty-free delicious food.
The Plant Café also offers a delivery service for those within two miles. So if you work around the city centre but can’t get away for lunch, you are in luck! Although I would recommend making the trip down to the café whenever possible as inside there is a lovely, cosy vibe and for the sunny days picnic blankets are available for anyone who would like to sit out on the green.
So for anyone that says there’s no such thing as tasty vegan cake: visit this café and prepare to be proven wrong.
The Plant Café can be found at 1 Cathedral Yard, EX1 1HJ.
