Festival makeup made easy
Festival season is here, and with many cool festivals going on in the South West, including Glastonbury, Beautiful Days and Camp Bestival, here are a few tips to achieve a little glamour to counter-balance the mud and lack of sleep! Keeping it low-maintenance is key; you want to look radiant, not made up, and you want to avoid touch-ups if possible. Read on for some great ideas!
1. Forget heavy makeup. What you want to go for is a lit-from-within glow. Try mixing some moisturizer in with your regular foundation to create a tinted moisturizer, which will make your skin look fresh and dewy. Mix in some sunscreen as well to protect your skin from all that sunshine (we can hope!)
2. Add concealer to cover under-eye circles and any spots you may have. Apply in really fine layers, adding more if needed. Less is more! Adding it in layers like this will ensure it lasts longer. Add a tiny bit of powder under the eyes if needed to set the concealer, but go easy! This look is all about radiance; remember, festival chic, not funeral chic!
3. Add bronzer, preferably a cream bronzer (Bourjois do an excellent one). Put it on the places where the sun would naturally hit your face, such as the temples, cheekbones, and the bridge of the nose. Beautiful!
4. Save on space and leave your blush at home. Instead, use your lipstick as a cream blush to give yourself a healthy flushed look. Simply pat it on with your fingers, pressing it into the cheeks rather than rubbing it.
5. Go easy with eye makeup. Start with a good eyelid primer, like Urban Decay’s Primer Potion, which will stop your eye shadow or pencil from creasing and disappearing. Then add a little colour. A pencil is a good alternative to eye shadow, as they can be pressed into the eyelid, look natural and last for hours. Rimmel do some good ones (Scandaleyes Shadow Sticks), as do Urban Decay (24/7 eye pencils).
6. Next up, eye liner. All good festival makeup requires a bit of messy, lived-in eye liner! Go for dark brown (less harsh than black), or add a little pizzazz with a coloured liner such as emerald or teal for instant glamour! Draw a line above your upper eyelash, then, using your finger, gently rub the line to give it a smoky, slept-in effect.
7. Add mascara, making sure to fan out your lashes as you do so. No clumpy lashes here!
8. After applying lip balm and giving it a few minutes to sink it, use your fingers to dab some lipstick into your lips to create a stain, which should last all day. Go for a nice, vibrant pink; my current favourite is Topshop’s very long lasting lipstick in Macaroon, a suits-everyone shade that lights up the complexion.
And that’s it! A long-lasting look that should see you through hours of sunshine and dancing, with minimal top-ups, if any! Enjoy!
