Getting your guest room ready for Christmas guests
Christmas is only weeks away, and soon your house will be bustling with guests. It's time to get that guest room ready so your friends and family can actually enjoy their stay. Don't leave preparing the guest room to the last minute. You will be in for more than a few unpleasant surprises. Start early by following these tips to add functionality and looks to your guest room:
Start by Cleaning
Removing the clutter is the first step to making any room in your home welcome to guests. If guest rooms remain unoccupied for months, as they often are, they eventually gather things that have no business being there. Therefore, make sure you pick up any stray toys or discarded clothes that might be taking up space in your guest room. Afterwards, thoroughly vacuum and scrub away the dust and the grime so the room is actually liveable.
Leave Room for Luggage
Your guests will arrive hauling luggage bags and suitcases, so there should be a place in the room for these items. Leave out a small space, big enough for two or three travelling suitcases to fit. If you are strapped for space, try removing a chair or a table to make room.
Prepare the Bed
The most important aspect of the guest room is the bed. It has to be spacious and clean for guests to feel comfortable. First, remove all the old sheets that have been on the bed for months. You can wash and replace, or better yet, buy newer designs. You can buy excellent stylish cotton duvets and sheets at specialty shops like Threel. Make sure there are enough pillows for the guests. You might also want to provide an extra set of blankets for the occupants. They will appreciate the gesture.
The Bathroom Should Have Toiletries
It's inattentive to leave the guest bathroom bare of toiletries. You shouldn't let your guests ask for soap and shampoo. Plan ahead and leave a toiletries basket with soap or shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste, shower caps and disposable razors. You can be particularly gracious by providing new toothbrushes with the packaging intact, mouthwash and hand sanitizer. A blow dryer would be great too.
Don't Forget Extra Towels
Your guests might pack their own towels, but you should nevertheless leave extra towels for them to use. Only provide recently washed and clean towels. They shouldn't smell like they've been in the back of your closet since last Christmas. The bathroom should have additional wash clothes.
Provide Some Reading Material
It's always nice to have something to read on winter nights. So, give your guests magazines, the latest newspapers or a good book to read while they wait for the festivities.
Make the Room Accessible
If you have elderly guests or guests with children, you have to make sure the room is safe for them to use. Add supports to the bathroom if necessary, and remove any slippery carpets. You should get anti-slip mats for the bathtub. Remove anything that could potentially choke a small child.
Finally, you can get some air freshener to make the guest room smell good just as it looks good. Leaving a pitcher of water and a glass in the room for your guests is another gracious gesture. Anticipate your guests’ needs in advance to make them feel warmly welcomed.
