Exeter’s Maritime History in Pictures, Song and Stories!

In March this year two of Exeter’s best known heritage organisations will be collaborating to support a unique event at the Exeter Custom House. Exeter Red Coat Guides and Exeter Canal and Quay Trust will present, The Inland Haven, which will bring to life tales of Exeter’s harbour and its links to the sea.

Once Exeter’s economic powerhouse, much of the story of the city’s maritime past has been forgotten - but what a story it was! An amazing cast of ‘salty’ characters have had connections with Exeter. Famous captains and admirals; infamous mutineers and smugglers; the fabulously rich and the grindingly poor have all over the centuries contributed to a tale of triumphs and disasters.

The Custom House Crew, a talented group of musicians, singers and storytellers will bring this forgotten story to life - not as a dry economic history lesson, but via a unique combination of music, songs, stories and images.

It’s now 50 years since the last commercial vessel visited the port of Exeter, so now is the time to remember and celebrate ‘Exeter’s lost route to the sea.’

Performance dates are: March 17, 18, 19 and 24, 25, 26.
