Cowick Street shop becomes destination for buying mobility aids

The Hospiscare charity shop in Cowick Street, Exeter, has found a new lease of life since focussing on providing mobility aids alongside its usual homewares and clothing. 

Mandy Harding, the Shop Manager for nearly six years, said: “We’ve always provided a great selection of homewares and furniture, but realised that because of our location, space and easy access, it made sense to focus on mobility aids. Our supporters donate all sorts of items - electric beds, riser recliner chairs and scooters. We’ve found our top sellers are 3 wheeled walkers and the 4 wheeled walkers that can also be sat on.  Walkers with a built-in tea tray are also popular for use around the home.

“It can be an emotional struggle for some people to admit they are not as mobile as they once were, but we also hear from these same people that it’s the best thing they’ve done, allowing themselves to get a walker or another item that enables them to get around, or be more comfortable.

“If you’re looking for something in particular that we don’t have in stock, just ask and we will let you know when the item you want has been donated. We can’t guarantee it, but generous local people donate such a variety of items, the chances of getting what you need are quite high.

“A shiny blue scooter in excellent condition was donated recently and a customer had previously told me their father wanted one. I sent her a photo by WhatsApp in the afternoon, which she then sent on to her dad. He came into the shop early the next morning and bought the scooter, driving away with an enormous smile! It’s changed his life and we’re so pleased to be able to sell good quality mobility aids to people who need them.

“If you have any mobility items to donate, please bring them direct to the shop on Cowick Street - there is a loading bay out the front - or take them to the Hospiscare Warehouse shop on Trusham Road, Marsh Barton and they will be brought to us on one of the Hospiscare vans.
