Cricket club bowled over by energy savings
St Thomas Cricket and Sports Club in Marsh Barton is reaping the rewards of a new 12kw solar installation that could slash the clubs electricity bills by up to 50%.
The club, which is now run as an event, conference and function venue, decided to go ahead with the 48 panel installation after the club manager cut his own electricity bills by 20% following the installation of solar panels on the roof of his own home.
Cricket Club Managers Mike and Sue Evans had panels installed on their home in Exeter by MIG Renewable Technologies just over a year ago and have so far received an income of over £1,000 as well as significantly reduced electricity bills.
Mike who runs several events at the Cricket Club including the Rock ‘n’ Roll evenings said: “When we saw the return on investment for our small installation at home, we knew it would make sense to have a larger installation at the cricket club to reduce expenditure on bills. The club needs to find new ways of cutting costs in order to survive; this is a long term investment that will benefit the club for the next 20 years.”
He continued: “Solar panels are a better investment than most bank or savings accounts. The return is substantial and we are reducing our carbon footprint at the same time. I’m looking forward to seeing the actual figures over the next year so that I can show the committee that we made the right decision.”
The Cricket Club installation by MIG Renewable Technologies of the latest high-tech PV panels will generate around 11,500kwh per year and will reduce the carbon emissions by 111.06 tonnes over 20 years. The return on investment is estimated at 20% and will save the club nearly £1,000 a year in electricity bills.

I would urge all commercial property owners and homeowners to look into solar panels as a long term investment.”
The St Thomas Cricket Club is available for hire with a dedicated conference room, skittle alley and function room for weddings or parties. It is also the venue for regular entertainment evenings such as ball room dance and country and western.
