Devon Hotel roundabout improvements complete

The upgrade of the Devon Hotel roundabout has been completed as part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements in south west Exeter.

Capacity has been increased on the western arm of the roundabout, with an additional lane entering the roundabout.

The central island has also been realigned, and traffic signals and a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing have been installed.

The improvements are part of the ongoing £55 million infrastructure enhancements, funded by the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund, to support the development of 2,500 new homes and employment land on the edge of the city.

Work is continuing on the A379 Trood Lane junction which is being widened and realigned to provide access to housing development. This includes the installation of footpaths, bus laybys and a pedestrian crossing.

A number of overnight closures will be needed at the Trood Lane junction to carry out resurfacing and lining. Timings of these overnight closures are still to be confirmed but work on the junction is due to be completed towards the end of the summer.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, said: “It’s good news that the roundabout is now fully open and good progress is being made on Trood Lane junction. It’s essential that these improvements benefit all forms of travel and the roundabout upgrade will make it safer for all road users, while the inclusion of a pedestrian crossing will support active travel. It’s not been easy for anyone travelling through this area in recent months, so thanks must go to the travelling public for bearing with us.”

Councillor Alan Connett, County Councillor for Exminster and Haldon, said: "These works have been essential due to the major house building taking place nearby. The disruption has been unavoidable and I am grateful to everyone in the local community for their patience while the works have been taking place. Safety for all road users is improved with the crossings and I also very much hope we will see a new crossing in place on Bad Homburg Way so it is safe to cross at all points around the Devon Hotel roundabout. With the new Matford Brook Academy also opening nearby in September, these crossings are especially important."

Councillor Yvonne Atkinson, County Councillor for Alphington and Cowick, said: “The improvements in the road are welcomed. I am pleased that Devon County Council contractors are trying to minimise the effect road closures will have on Alphington by carrying out work at night.”
