Exeter charity in running for competition windfall
An Exeter charity has appealed for the public’s support as it aims to win top prize in a national competition, enabling significant improvements to its services.
SAFE Foundation is one of 12 finalists from around the UK in the hunt for £5,000 in Selco Builders Warehouse’s Community Heroes competition, which attracted nearly 2,000 entries.
A public vote is open until November 30 to decide this year’s champion, while there is also £1,000 up for grabs for the runner-up.

All 12 finalists selected by judges over the course of the last six months have already won £500 worth of building materials from Selco, which has a branch in Exeter on Filmer Way.
SAFE Foundation is one of the leading domestic abuse recovery organisations in Devon. For over five decades it has been transforming the choices and life paths available for adult and child survivors of domestic violence and abuse.
The charity offers a range of community-based programmes, including group and individual trauma recovery therapy for adults and children and its whole-family approach, Flourishing Families.
Lucy Skye, Programme Development Lead & Therapist SAFE, said £5,000 would make a big difference to the work the group does in the local community.
She said: “Every week we welcome in over 100 members of our community, delivering therapeutic recovery support that can help them to heal, recover and move forward positively from their experiences.
“We want our community to come into a warm, calm, safe space. Survivors often have incredibly low self-esteem and very difficult home environments.
“By creating a high-quality space, we give them the message they're worth caring for and they have value. They feel invested in and, in time, believe they are worth investing in themselves.
“Winning the top prize would allow us create more therapeutic space within our building, refurbishing our group room, increasing the number of survivors we can support and increasing accessibility for all of our community.”
Simon Humpage, Head of Multi-Channel Marketing at Selco, said: “Our Community Heroes campaign has once again captured the country’s imagination with nearly 2,000 good causes getting involved.
“We have already supported a dozen monthly winners with £6,000 worth of product and we’re excited to head into the next stage of the competition.
“We’ve had some amazing entries so SAFE Foundation has done exceptionally well to make it this far. The prize money would make a huge difference to the work they do in the local area.”
