First steps to replace old bridge on Exeter Quayside taking place
The first steps to replace an old bridge on Exeter Quayside that had come to the end of its life have taken place this week.
The wooden Mallison Bridge, which spans the medieval leats on the north bank of the River Exe, has been removed as its timbers had become rotten and unsafe to use.
Planning permission for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge was given in December 2018 and a new structure will be built as soon as adequate funding has been identified.
The old bridge had been closed since the end of 2018. Signs were erected and people advised to take a diversion route via Commercial Road.
The bridge, which dates back to 1984, had to be repaired in March 2017 after some wooden sections became rotten. After work was carried out, it became apparent that a long-term solution was needed.
Prior to 1984, there was no bridge over that part of the leat and people had to instead walk around, using the current road bridge in front of the Custom House.
