Food meets craft and music for new festival
Partners and sponsors gathered to celebrate the countdown for Nourish, Bovey Tracey's first annual festival of craft, food and music which takes place on 5 and 6 September.
The small town on the edge of Dartmoor has become a centre for contemporary culture; Bovey Tracey is home to one of the country’s top annual craft events, a nationally acclaimed centre for craft, and an award winning artisan cheese specialist.
Nourish will celebrate the best in regional food, craft and music in an event designed to feed the body, the mind and the senses. The festival is led by The Contemporary Craft Festival, The Devon Guild of Craftsmen and the Cheese Shed.
The Nourish Food Fair will fill Bovey's high street with some of the region's best producers. Freshly prepared street food will whet the appetite, and Ashburton Cookery School will present an inspirational Cookery Theatre with some of Devon’s finest chefs.
The Nourish Craft Fair will showcase a sample of the top quality makers from the South West, complemented by events at The Devon Guild of Craftsmen's Riverside Mill.
The musical programme will open with Devon Baroque orchestra performing a programme of Bach, Vivaldi, Handel and Corelli. Exciting young percussionists Malleticious will play in a range of styles on percussion instruments including marimba & vibraphone. The concerts will culminate with the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet playing Borodin, Barber, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.
The Great Bovey Bake Off and Junior Bovey Bake Off will offer opportunities to get the community reaching for its mixing bowls. Community activities will also include opportunities for pupils from Bovey Tracey Primary School to enjoy percussion workshops and special performances.
The event has received funding from Arts Council England, Devon County Council and The AlmshouseTrust. This enables Nourish to work with world renowned musicians and for pupils from Bovey Tracey Primary School to enjoy percussion workshops and special performances.
Bovey Tracey is widely known for its craft and culture. As well as the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, the annual Contemporary Craft Festival, the town is home to a range of craft specialists and suppliers including Bovey Handloom Weavers, Teign Valley Glass Lasting Impressions Goldsmiths, Spin a Yarn and Serendipity Patchwork & Quilting.
Festival organiser Sarah James said: “Bovey Tracey is an amazing town. For such a small place, it has a wealth of opportunities for local people and visitors to enjoy craft and cultural events. All this activity has a positive impact on the local economy so there are huge benefits for the local community. With Nourish, we’re bringing together food, craft and music so that there’s something for everyone to enjoy. This is our first year, but we already have big plans for a successful annual event.”
