Family-run restaurant Rusty Pig has been awarded a prestigious gold in the Taste of the West Hospitality and Retail Awards 2014.

The respected awards aim to find the best places to eat, drink, shop and sleep in the South West.

Owner and head chef, Robin Rea said: “We are delighted to have achieved gold as this is based on a variety of criteria including local sourcing, quality, atmosphere and value for money.

“Taste is an important part of the Rusty Pig ethos - we only use pigs that have had a natural diet, the freedom to roam and a good lifespan, as this gives the meat a better flavour. We keep some pigs on our own smallholding, and others come from local farms that have been thoroughly vetted.

Former River Cottage senior chef Robin opened the restaurant in 2011 and it is now a popular choice for locals as well as tourists and visitors to the region. Dining is open plan, giving a cosy and informal atmosphere. The restaurant opens on Friday and Saturday evenings, and there are frequent culinary 'events' in partnership with other chefs from Devon and overseas.

As well as managing the restaurant, Robin also sells sausages, salamis, terrines, cured meat and joints, prepared on the premises. The retail side of the business was also successful in the Taste of the West Awards, achieving a silver.

The Rusty Pig will now go forward to the awards ceremony on September 29, where the ‘Best Of’ winners will be announced. For more information visit www.therustypig.co.uk
