Investigation begins into Marsh Barton fire

Police and fire crews have begun investigating the cause of major blaze at an Exeter car show room.

At its height around 40 firefighters tackled the fire, at Hendys Car Supermarket on the Marsh Barton Industrial Estate, which was reported to be under control by 7:45am.

Crews remain at the scene and the incident is still causing major traffics delays due blocked roads on the estate.

Arriving on scene at around 5:34am firefighters found smoke coming from the commercial building, which measures 20 metres by 10 metres, and was well alight.

Five fire appliances, along with support from an incident commander vehicle and a support appliance attended the scene.

At 7am fascia boards on the property were exposed to eliminate the spread of the fire.

The fire service report that 30 percent of the building was damaged by fire but there is also extensive smoke damage to the remainder of the property.

The fire was extinguished by fire crews using six breathing apparatus wearers, two hose reel jets, two main jets, two positive pressure ventilation fans and small tools.
