People with disabilities are invited to experience a festival of activities at Blue Light Day tomorrow (Wednesday 29 July).

The event will be held at St Lukes Science and Sports College, Exeter.

Supported by Devon and Cornwall Police and other public, private and charitable organisations, the theme of the day is ‘be healthy, be active and be safe’.

The event, which is the first of its kind in Exeter, aims to help people with disabilities keep safe and become more confident and independent in their community. It hopes to help break down any barriers that exist between disabled people and the emergency services, so people have a better understanding of how and when to contact the emergency services and be more comfortable in reporting hate crime.

“The Blue Light Day is important for so many reasons,” said Sergeant Sally Kingdon from Devon and Cornwall Police. “It gives people with disabilities the opportunity to meet Devon’s’ emergency services. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for them to say what they think about the services provided and identify ways they may be improved.”

As part of the day’s activities, people can get involved in many different activities including football, tag rugby, badminton, new age curling, cycle training and dance. There will be music, face painting and other activities throughout the day.

Emergency services including police, fire, NHS and the ambulance service will be on site, as well as educational and voluntary organisations. A police dog, helicopter and traffic vehicle will be on site, as well as the urban search and rescue department and a fire simulator.

Sergeant Kingdon added, “We have a common aim to protect the most vulnerable in our communities and the first step in doing this is to make sure they have confidence in our ability to do so. The Blue Light day is a fun and inclusive way for people to work together to ensure that organisations deliver their services in line with the country’s equality and diversity requirements.  Events like this go a long way to doing that and help remove any barriers that may exist.”

The Blue Light Day is free to attend. Please book your place now by emailing devonbluelight@roc-uk.org or call Jo on 07808 053992.

The event has been organised by Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon Fire & Rescue, Active Devon, Devon Link-Up, Robert Owen Communities, St Loyes Foundation and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group. It is supported by St Lukes Science and Sports College.
