New foal commemorates Olympic and Paralympic Games

The Donkey Sanctuary’s supporters have celebrated the Olympic and Paralympic Games by naming the charity’s newest foal Olympia.

On 12 August a colt foal was born at one of The Donkey Sanctuary’s farms after his mother came to the Sanctuary in foal.

An online naming contest began on Facebook and Twitter and the lucky name chosen for the Sanctuary’s newest addition was Olympia.

Ryan Peasland, Digital Communications Officer said: “We had hundreds of suggestions to name this little foal, many of which were accompanied by kind donations from our devoted supporters. When the name Olympia was picked, it was perfect! What a way to commemorate the achievements made by the GB Olympic team in Rio, and a lucky mascot for the Paralympics that are beginning this week.”

There were many name suggestions, including; Rio, Champ, Farah, Trotty (after Laura Trott) and Foaly McFoalface. The online donations made by supporters to name the adorable foal totalled over £1,000 which will go towards helping donkeys and mules worldwide.

The Donkey Sanctuary have a strict no breeding policy, but any donkey that comes into their care is guaranteed Sanctuary for life, including any bundles of joy they may already be carrying. The sight of a fluffy foal is one not to be missed, and regular updates on Olympia’s progress will be on the Sanctuary’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
