Police find body in search for teenager

Officers searching for Nathan Wood, who went missing in Totnes on Friday 5 August, have found a body in the River Dart.

The body was discovered by police divers at around 12pm on Sunday 7 August.

Formal identification has not yet taken place but Nathan’s family have been informed.

Detectives from Totnes CID will carry out a full investigation into the circumstances of the teenager’s death and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Nathan, who was 16 and from the Paignton area, was reported missing to police on Friday 5 August. He was last seen in the Swallowfields area of the town, heading towards the River Dart, at around 6pm.

Local officers searched the area for Nathan since Friday evening, with assistance from police dogs, a police helicopter, the Coastguard, volunteers from Dartmoor Search and Rescue Group and divers from Devon and Cornwall Police and Avon and Somerset Police.

Inspector Tracy Sharam, based in Torquay, said: “We would like to thank the community in Totnes for their support while the search has been underway for Nathan over the last few days.

“Our thoughts remain with the family at this difficult and upsetting time.”
