The East Devon District Council (EDDC) Countryside team, which manages the Seaton Wetlands nature reserve, is calling for enthusiastic volunteers to join the Discovery Hut team during the busy summer period.

Volunteers at the Discovery Hut play a crucial role in enhancing the visitor experience. Volunteers work in pairs to greet visitors, provide up-to-date information about recent wildlife sightings and serve simple refreshments.

From the Discovery Hut visitors to the wetlands can view live footage on the seasonal nest cams, hire pond dipping equipment and explore the nature table.

No prior experience or expertise is needed to become a volunteer. All that’s needed is an interest in wildlife, enthusiasm, and a willingness to engage with the public.

During the summer months the Countryside Team plans to have the Discovery Hut open from 10am to 4pm daily. They are seeking additional volunteers to cover shifts from 10am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm, with a particular need for weekend coverage. All volunteers will receive training and have access to an online rota to schedule shifts that fit their availability.

Councillor Geoff Jung, EDDC’s portfolio holder for Coast, Country, and Environment, said: "Volunteering at the Discovery Hut is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to spend more time in nature while sharing their passion for the natural world with visitors of all ages. Regardless of your age or background, volunteering at the Discovery Hut is a rewarding role."

Volunteer Jasmine Burges, said: "I love volunteering at the Discovery Hut, I’ve learnt so much about the wildlife on my doorstep, met so many lovely people and it’s given me a real boost in confidence. I’d encourage anyone who loves nature and meeting new people to get in touch to find out more."
