Entries open for Estuary charity swim
Dust off the Speedos – the call is out for people to take to the water for the annual Topsham-Turf swim organised by the Estuary League of Friends.
This year’s event takes place on Saturday 17 August and covers the traditional mile-and-a-half course from Topsham Sailing Club to the Turf Hotel.
It is now eight years since the swim – a long-standing event in Topsham – was revived by Topsham ferryman Mike Stevens. Since 2005 it has been organised by Estuary League of Friends and now has support from Michelmores Solicitors.
“Last year we had 100 swimmers and raised almost £8,000. We want to break that record this year. In the past we’ve used the proceeds for a minibus and to improve services such as our lunch club and day centre. It provides vital income for us and every penny goes into our services for people around East Devon” explains Estuary’s chief executive, Rachel Gilpin.
“It’s a great event that creates a party atmosphere. We have professional medical help and sailing crews on hand and the estuary is patrolled by kayakers so you can have a fun time in safety. All the swimmers need to do is register in advance, secure some sponsorship and enjoy the unique experience” explains Rachel.
A number of corporate sponsorship opportunities are available by calling Sarah Coleman at Michelmores Solicitors on 01392 688688 (sarah.coleman@michelmores.com)
Swimmers must register in advance on www.michelmores.com/swim and each swimmer pays a £25 fee with an additional £25 in sponsorship for Estuary League of Friends.
The Estuary League of Friends is the local charity that assists the people of Topsham, Countess Wear, Cat & Fiddle Park and Clyst St Mary, Clyst St George, Ebford and Exton who need their help.
