Call for seven authors to be banned from Jaipur Literary Festival
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a right-wing pro-Hindu NGO linked to the BJP political party, have joined their party in wanting seven Pakistani authors banned from attending the Jaipur Literature Fest after recent troubles in the Line of Control where one Pakistani soldier and two Indian soldiers died.
Separately, organisers of the Jaipur Literature Festival were warned against allowing authors who had read out passages from Salman Rushdie's 'Satanic Verses' at the event last year by Islamist groups.
The groups want a ban on four authors - Amitava Kumar, Ruchir Sharma, Jeet Thayil and Hari Kunzru - who had read out passages from the controversial book after Salman Rushdie was not allowed to attend after police said they had received intelligence of an assassination plot against him.
The Jaipur Literature Festival 2013 will be held from January 24th to 28th. (NewsPoint)
