Flying Dragon foretells a momentous happening
A newly designed flag depicting the mythical Killerton Dragon was hoisted up the flagpole by villagers of Silvertonshire this week.
This was to herald the coming of the Silverton Street Market on 3 August. William Hacking, 93 and Harry Madams, 7 were representing the community.
Legend has it that the dragon was born out of the flames of the ancient Killerton volcano and only appears on momentous occasions. According to locals it was last seen just before the Millennium swooping over the village doing a loop-the-loop.
The dragon is part of Silverton's themed event: “The Myths and Legends of Silverton and it's Shire”.
This year the Street Market is going to be larger than ever before with over a 100 stalls in the main street. The committee have worked hard to bring an interesting and diverse day of events featuring Plymouth's amazing junk band, Weapons of Sound, as well as performances from Devon Tribal Belly Dancers, Crediton Town Band and Tiverton Majorettes. Hearts of Pargon will demonstrate Tolkien's imaginings in their unique way as well as all the usual attractions such as the all day BBQ and children's attractions. All proceeds go to local charities.
