Annual Football Varsity continues to support local charities

Excitement is building for the sixth annual Mike Polden Charity Football Match between the University of Exeter Athletic Football Club and Exeter City FC on 25 September.

Proceeds from the match are given to the two football club’s chosen charities; the Adam Stansfield Foundation, which provides sporting opportunities for young people in Devon, Herefordshire and Somerset and the Cardiomyopathy Association which offers support and advice to sufferers of heart muscle disease.

Last year’s event saw over 3,900 students pack the stands at St James’ Park for the charity match, held in memory of Football Club member Mike Polden who tragically died of cardiomyopathy in 2001 whilst out running, and Exeter City’s Adam Stansfield who was lost to Bowel Cancer in 2010.

Athletic Union President Alex Powell, who helps oversee the management of the University’s 49 Student Sports clubs, said:“Not only is this a brilliant student event, but it raises valuable funds to provide support to these two incredible charities. Last year we raised £2,500.00 which was split equally between the two charities so that they can continue to provide essential care to those who need it most.”

Each year the clubs take part in a number of fund raising activities for their chosen charities.  Every year AU Clubs raise £1000s for charity through events, fund raisers and challenges. The AU Clubs also visit 20 schools in the Exeter area to provide sports coaching to local children, alongside Sporting Stars Days where children are invited onto campus to learn about sport.

For the last five years the varsity has been held at St James’ Park, home to League Two side Exeter City. Last year’s match saw a dominant performance from the home side, winning 3:0 over their University rivals.

Powell added: “We are incredibly grateful to Exeter City Football Club for inviting us to their ground for the match. The Football Varsity has become an essential event on the student calendar and is a brilliant way for the whole student body to come together and enjoy a friendly sporting event. There is always a fantastic atmosphere with fancy dress, music and a display by the University Cheerleaders adding to the festivities.  Last year’s match was really enjoyable, and the University Football Club will be looking to make up for their previous defeat against City.”
