Dozens of vehicles stuck in floodwater across the county
Fire crews in Devon and Somerset have attended 51 incidents involving vehicles stuck in floodwater in the last 24 hours alone.
Crews have been called to 550 incidents in total over the same period with more rain expected on Sunday evening.
Fire officers are asking residents not to drive through floodwater, as they could be putting themselves or others in danger. Attending incidents which could be prevented may also divert fire crews from other incidents where lives are at risk.
Group Manager Chris Blackburn said: “It is impossible for motorists to tell how deep water is or the effect it may have on their vehicles, particularly after dark.
“We recommend that people do not make non-essential journeys tonight (Sunday) if they live in areas prone to flooding.
“If they do see floodwater on the road, they should not attempt to drive through it but should try to find an alternative route.”
Fire crews from Devon & Somerset will continue to attend incidents where lives are at risk during the current adverse weather conditions.
