Supporters and shoppers stopped at Exeter’s Princesshay to watch companies compete for the Pancake World Champion title today.

The Pancake World Championship is a partnership between local Event Management Company Wacky Nation and Princesshay, to raise funds for local charity Dream-A-Way, Princesshay’s charity of the year for 2014. It was hosted by Radio Exe.

The Championship saw teams from companies including Barclays, Gourmandine and Santander flipping pancakes whilst trying to reach the finish line first.

Despite the event bringing out competitive natures in most of the companies involved, the overall vibe was of fun and doing something good for charity.

Molly McGirr, who competed with Gourmandine Crêperie and Bistrot, said: “We are here having fun for a good cause and obviously being pancake day we sell Crepes so it is the right thing to do.”

Whilst Helen Gibbings and Katherine Wright from Crosse & Crosse said: “We took part because it’s good fun and for a good cause. We aren’t feeling confident, we were surprised to get through the heat (first) stage!”

Unfortunately Crosse & Crosse were right to be worried, as all eleven competitors were beaten to the title by Santander Bank’s team.

The team, speaking of their win, said: “We did better than we thought. It feels flipping marvellous and we look forward to taking on the challenge again next year!”

Mike Rock, a volunteer and committee member of Dream-A-Way, explained why the event was so important for the charity.  He said: “This event makes the public aware of who we are and also gives us the opportunity to find new clients that can help us.”

Awareness of the charity was certainly raised by this unique event, with many by standers stopping to watch out of pure curiosity.

Phil Hiscox said: “I don’t know anybody taking part in the race but my granddaughter wanted to see what was going on and we both like it and think it is good!”
