Double Considerate Constructor’s Award success for SWH

SWH, a local contractor providing civil engineering, highway maintenance and build solutions throughout the south west, has recently been awarded two Considerate Constructor’s Awards.

SWH will attend the highly anticipated awards ceremony in London alongside leading industry figures including Nick Baveystock, Director General of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Paul Everall, Chief Executive of the LABC (Local Authority Building Control). At the ceremony they will find out how their awards have been ranked; bronze, silver or gold.

The firm has been notified that they will be receiving one Considerate Constructor’s Award for the Devon County Council Highway Term Maintenance Contract Northern Division and a second for the Crediton Link Road project.

SWH has successfully tendered for and won the Devon County Council’s Term Maintenance Contract three times against stiff competition for the maintenance of the Devon Road Network, which consists of 12,500km of roads and some 3,500 bridges and structures.

The firm’s HTMC Northern Division is headed up by Works Manager, Paul Street. The Pathfields Depot was noted as projecting a ‘positive and professional image of the company and the industry’, as well as implementing ‘excellent policies, procedures and working practices to prevent waste, save energy and protect the natural environment’.

Phil Trenaman, Services Manager for SWH said, “In our quality submission submitted with our tender in 2006 to win the Devon County Council Term Maintenance Contract, we said we would endeavour to ‘undertake all works in accordance with the Considerate Contractors Scheme and aim to receive an excellence award for the contract’. We have achieved our aim and we couldn’t be happier”.

The link road project, which started in August of 2013 and opened ahead of schedule in October of last year, involved the construction of a new two lane single carriageway road. The road now goes from the roundabout at the Tesco Superstore onto the A377 and then to the junction of Commonmarsh Lane and Marsh Lane in Lords Meadow Industrial Estate. Peripheral works also took place to improve the nearby junction of Exhibition Road and Commercial Road by the construction of a mini roundabout. The scheme was described by CCS as maintaining ‘excellent standards throughout’ and they also commented on how SWH had taken ‘innovative steps earlier in the contract to deal with potential surface water problems; a true indicator of exceptional performance.’

The awards ceremony will take place at Plaisterers' Hall, London on Monday 20 April.
