Six dogs rescued in A38 horror crash

Two men sustained serious injuries after a single-vehicle collision on the A38 at Chudleigh Knighton in the early hours of this morning [17 August].

Emergency services were called at 3.45am after a Ford Transit van left the road and collided with a tree near to the Chudleigh turn off on the northbound carriageway.

Three men, all from Spain, sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Two passengers, both men in their 20s, received serious injuries and remain in Derriford Hospital. One of the men sustained life-threatening injuries.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken to Torbay Hospital for treatment. He was later arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving and remains in custody at Torquay.

The Spanish-registered van was transporting six dogs and all were safely recovered by police and taken to a local kennel to be checked by a vet.

The A38 was closed at Chudleigh for four-and-a-half hours while officers carried out a forensic examination of the scene.

Officers from Exeter Serious Collisions Investigation Unit are investigating the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
