Rest centres open for stranded motorists

Several rest centres opened up for stranded motorists across Devon last night [Thursday 1 March 2018], which the public have been advised to attend if they are suitably equipped and are able to reach.

The following rest centres are open:

Chudleigh

If you are close by, suitably equipped (carrying a torch, suitable footwear, a mobile phone and wearing warm clothing) and are able to, please walk safely to it.

Otherwise please remain in your vehicle. We are doing as much as we can, with our partners to reach people. Please do not take unnecessary risks.

When you arrive you will be asked to provide vehicle details, location and contact number.

Chief Superintendent Glen Mayhew said: “There are three key areas of concern which are the A30 at Okehampton, where the road is impassable. Our advice is for motorists to stay with their cars. We are doing everything we can.

“The A38 near South Brent is closed due to heavy snow and is likely to be closed for several hours and remains a vulnerable location. Again, our advice is to stay in your vehicle.

“Haldon Hill on the A38 is open and cars are slowly moving but relieving stranded vehicles is taking some time and is only passable with care. There is a considerable backlog of vehicles.

“Ahead of tomorrow morning, we continue to advise people not to travel as conditions overnight will persist and there is potential for freezing rain and snow.

“Conditions tomorrow will be dangerous and we are urging the public not to take unnecessary risks.”
