Ordinary people wanted for Princetown-based Ice Warrior’s Polar Expedition
Have you ever considered being part of a polar expedition? A world first polar expedition and one that is hugely purposeful and worthwhile? Probably not.
Well this is your chance!
Explorer, Jim McNeill, is looking for ordinary people, novices, from all walks of life and echelons of society to train to become modern-day explorers and join a team to reach The Northern Pole of Inaccessibility.
This is a significant place on the planet which has yet to be reached by humankind and therefore stands as the last real world first to be accomplished in the Polar Regions. It is, in fact, one of four north poles, the others being the geographic, magnetic and geomagnetic north poles.
The reason it hasn’t been “conquered” is not only because of its name but it is defined as the centre of the Arctic Ocean or the furthest point from land and some 270 miles further than the geographic north pole. It is an 800-mile, 80-day journey which Jim has split into 4 legs and is recruiting people to train to take on one of these 20-day sections.
That’s not all though. As the teams ski the 800 miles from the edge to the centre of the ocean in relays, they will be conducting a “vital piece of citizen science”, collecting simple but crucial data for the scientific community which will further our knowledge of exactly what is happening to the arctic ice cap.
A Recruitment Day will be taking place on 15th September, where local people from the south- west can sample what it is like to take part in such an extreme expedition.
The day will start with an introduction from Jim. Participants will then be split into teams named after renowned explorers and asked to undertake a number of challenging but fun tasks - competing for the glory of winning.
Cost will be a donation to the expedition of £5 - if you cannot afford that then this will be reimbursed on arrival on the day. It is set to be informative, educational, great fun and (hopefully) inspiring.
