Fire service asks the public to avoid home bonfires and fireworks

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is reminding the public to stay safe around bonfire night by avoiding bonfires and fireworks at home. 

The safest way to enjoy bonfire night is to attend an organised display. Home bonfires and fireworks can cause incidents and injury, putting pressure on the emergency services. 

Ros Clarke, group manager for prevention, said: “Bonfire night and the days surrounding it are notoriously busy for us, and also our emergency service colleagues.

“We are asking the public to be considerate of others when it comes to bonfires and fireworks. For many people, and animals, fireworks can be frightening. The safest way to enjoy bonfire night is to go to an organised professional bonfire night event.

“If you are unable to attend an organised display, keep bonfires or fireworks small, and appropriate size for the area. Never leave bonfires unattended and make sure you have a source of water such as a bucket or hose nearby for both the bonfire and any fireworks.”

It's much safer and more controlled to attend an organised fireworks display. Most people's gardens are not suitable or big enough for fireworks or bonfires.

Store fireworks safely and keep fires and fireworks well away from anything that could catch fire such as sheds, fences, and your home. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby, and never leave anything unattended. You'll find firework safety guidance here. 

Let your neighbours know about your plans

Also let your neighbours know if you’re having a bonfire or fireworks so they don’t think it’s an emergency and call the fire service unnecessarily. Be mindful that thatch properties are extremely vulnerable to catching fire from bonfire embers and fireworks.

Let the fire service know about your bonfire 

Most of the incidents fire fighters attend on bonfire night are false alarms.  If you're having a bonfire let the fire service know by calling their non-emergency number: 0333 399 0014. This will help avoid sending firefighters out to controlled bonfires when they’re not needed.
