Sand Dam success!
A project to help unite a mission community has raised nearly £3,000 for the diocese Sand Dam Lent Appeal. This now takes the total to £8,874.
“I’m absolutely thrilled!” said the Revd Chas Deacon, Diocesan Companion Links Mission Officer. “This will help us to make a good start towards assisting water security in the Thika Diocese in Kenya. There’s a lot to be done!”
The Five Alive Mission Community was the first mission community to be created in the Exeter and undertook the fundraising project to promote unity. Simultaneously they also followed a Lent course called, ‘Seasons of Renewal' including a session on mission and reaching the community.
Fundraising events included, a coffee morning and series of lunches in one village, a musical evening in another and a quiz night. Young people were also encouraged to fill Smartie tubes with money to bring to church, and collections were taken. Sand Dams caught the imagination of people outside the church as well. One person who is not a churchgoer also held a lunch to raise money.
In total they raised £2,940.10.
“This was far more than we had ever imagined we could raise, and I believe we ‘caught a wave’ so to speak. We are always told, see what God is doing and join in, and I think that is precisely what happened. God was touching our hearts and when we reacted with generosity he multiplied our efforts,” said the Revd Kate Woolven, curate.
