Wellies at the ready! - Glastonbury Festival begins today

The gates of Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset were opened this morning, but it was not for the purpose of letting the everyday tractor come through, instead it was opened to let the first of an expected 135,000 music revellers enter the farm to begin the weekend-long party at Glastonbury.

This year the main headliners are the Arctic Monkeys, Mumford and Sons and of course the Rolling Stones, who surprisingly have never played at Glastonbury until now. There had been several rumours that the likes of Prince and the pop stars Rihanna and Lady Gaga would be the main headline acts but it seems the organisers have decided to focus on having stadium-rock bands for the main acts. Other artists on the line-up include The XX, Vampire Weekend and a previous resident of Totnes, Devon- Ben Howard.

Despite many revellers probably packing their wellington boots for the weekend of festivities, it is unlikely that the mud will be the main headliner this year. Today’s forecast is expected to be little to no clouds with high temperatures of 18C, Thursday also looks promising with little to no wind and temperatures reaching 17C but by midday it is expected to be overcast.  Over Friday and Saturday the weather will be cloudy but mostly dry and temperatures are expecting to peak at 18C.

However, it seems Sunday is the day to pile on the sunscreen and put on the sunnies, as it is expected to be a scorcher with temperatures hitting 26C.
The festival vibe has not just remained in Glastonbury, it has also stretched down to Exeter as this Friday, Johnny Marr, most famously known for being the lead guitarist in The Smiths is performing a sold-out warm up show at the Phoenix, before his Glastonbury performance.

There has also been an appearance of some of Exeter’s local businesses at the festival, Devon Coffee are currently down there ensuring that festival goers achieve their caffeine fix before heading over to the John Peel stage to dance the weekend away!
