Zoo keepers at Living Coasts are on high alert for hatching eggs!

Staff are keeping their eye on macaroni penguins and other species at Torquay’s coastal zoo.

Senior keeper Lois Rowell said: “We have five pairs of macaroni penguins on eggs. The first mac eggs could hatch during half term week. This is around the normal time of year for them.”

Macaroni penguins breed on their own rocky beach with a shady sunroof and a special cooling system of water pipes and mist sprays.

As they build nests out of pebbles, the chicks are more easily seen than those of the...

New book on treating colicky babies contradicts NHS thinking

A newly published book, ‘Calming Colic - How to Help the 10 Causes of Colic’ by osteopath and naturopath Christian Bates, contradicts the thinking on the NHS website which says that, ‘...the causes of colic are unknown and that there is no cure’.

Having treated many babies for colic over a 15 year period, the author began to see...

In a statement on the DEFRA website, he said: “I completely understand why people are so concerned about this issue. It’s totally unacceptable that people have been sold something that is not what they think it is.

“Investigations are going on across Europe, and the evidence so far suggests that it’s either criminal activity or...

Findus beef lasagne products found with horse meat

As part of its ongoing investigation into mislabelled meat, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed that the meat content of beef lasagne products recalled by Findus has tested positive for more than 60% horse meat.

Findus withdrew the beef lasagne products after its French supplier, Comigel, raised concerns about the type of meat used in the lasagne.

The FSA has said "We have no evidence to suggest that this is a food safety risk. However, the FSA has ordered Findus to test the lasagne for the veterinary drug phenylbutazone, or 'bute'. Animals treated with...

The Only People who Like Change are Wet Babies!

Many times, in order to survive we have to start a change process. Change, for most people, is an unnerving experience. But as the old saying goes, change is inevitable. It’s one of the only constants in life. I have said before, it is easy to change things. It is not so easy to change people. And therein lies the rub. As author Bruce Barton observed, “When you are through changing, you are through.” Most organizations won’t survive if they don’t learn how to change as they grow and adapt to market conditions. But employees sometimes resist anything new – not because they’re stubborn or...
