A better life without fossil fuels: Is it possible? A group of community organizations in Exeter think it is.

In the lead up to the Paris climate change negotiations starting this month, Alternatiba Exeter is creating a ‘Village of Alternatives’ on Saturday 21st November, demonstrating how a low carbon life can also be better.

Local projects in energy and economics, health initiatives, community farms and others are coming together and inviting the public to come in and see. These will all be on show at Southernhay United Reformed Church Hall from 11am.

Creating Community in the face of Challenge

Earlier this week I found myself on a train between Exeter and Birmingham which was stopped at Gloucester because of a gas leak and where a two hour wait and chaos ensued. Eventually I arrived at my destination almost 3 hours late and the fragmentation of our once effective railway system is very apparent.

It is clear that the train operators and station companies do not always have contingency plans and, as usual in such situations, official communications are very poor with nobody seeming to know what is going on.

What really happens is that the institutional life of the...

Baked Alaska: Time to Change the Temperature

Riding Lights Theatre Company comes to Exeter to serve up a sharp and deliciously comic slice of Baked Alaska - bringing interconnecting stories of the wild and unpredictable effects of climate change from the four corners of the earth.

Scientists, farmers, oil magnates, climate warriors, prophets, mothers, journalists and others just like you and me – we’re all in the mix and hungry for a recipe of hope. In the struggle over power, some sound the warming bell, some blow hot and cold, while others make a pudding of the planet....

Solar schools step up to the climate change challenge

Now in its fourth year, 10:10’s Solar Schools project has worked with a network of 65 schools across the country, raising nearly half a million pounds and installing over 830 solar panels.

Solar Schools helps schools raise money to put solar panels on their roofs. It offers schools a way to boost budgets, cut carbon and forge new bonds with their local community. With an extension of the project launched this month, it’s now even easier for schools to get involved.

Depending on the size of the roof and the number of panels installed, Solar Schools could save an average of £...

Youngsters are set to camp out at the Met Office this weekend to learn about the science behind weather.

Met Office Science Camps provide a unique opportunity for 11-13 year old students to take part in demonstrations and hands-on activities led by Met Office staff, while camping overnight at Met Office headquarters in Exeter.

The activities cover a wide range of topics which explain how we understand, measure and forecast the weather and climate.

The Met Office Science Camps take place over a number of weekends throughout the spring and summer terms. They are part...

To Vote or not to Vote?

After observing the unedifying General Election campaign nationally and being involved in several local Hustings, I have to honestly say I am feeling very uninspired and pretty low about the overall state of English politics. In my view, we face an unprecedented global ecological challenge and a menacing destabilisation of democracy. Together these two call for an intense campaign to de-carbonise as soon as possible on the one hand, and a profound and radical overhaul of our political and economic systems and structures on the other. This means we need to set out detailed programmes to...

2015 - Climate Crunch Year

A recent scientific report has suggested that 4 out of 9 ‘planetary boundaries’ have been crossed*.

If pushed beyond safe limits, the Earth may become less hospitable for humankind to prosper. In this update on the boundaries, the authors found that climate change, the loss of biosphere integrity (through species extinction, and the loss of genetic and functional diversity), land-system change (for example deforestation), and biochemical flows (such as phosphorus and nitrogen from fertilisers) have passed beyond safe levels. The other five processes relate to ozone depletion, ocean...
