A Devon brewery business has been announced as a finalist in the Heroes of Net Zero competition held at a special awards ceremony hosted by Intuit at the COP26 international climate change summit in Glasgow.

More than 160 businesses entered the competition, making a commitment at the UK Business Climate Hub to achieve net zero by 2050, in line with the government’s own climate commitment.

Three companies from Devon have been named as some of the best rural businesses in the country after winning at the regional heat of the Rural Business Awards.

Apricot Centre CIC from Dartington, Rull Orchard Ltd from Thorverton and The Outdoors Group from Shillingford Abbot all scooped prizes at the South West regional finals of the Rural Business Awards in partnership with Amazon, which took place virtually this year.

Michael Taylor ready to race at Paratriathlon World Championships

Michael Taylor from Barnstaple and who studies and trains in Bristol, is set to pull on the British trisuit and compete at the World Triathlon Para Championships in Abu Dhabi on Friday 5 November.

Taylor, who races in the PTS4 classification, will take on the world’s best on Friday at Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The event is based around the Yas Marina, with the route taking athletes around the marina circuit.

DCE partners are leading the charge

A digital map displaying the 403 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging bays currently being delivered by Devon’s councils has been added to the Devon Climate Emergency (DCE) website.

All the bays will be delivered by December 2022. They will be for public use and spread over 168 locations throughout the county.

The delivery of a network of EV chargers is a key part of the Carbon Plan being drawn up by the DCE, a partnership of councils, public bodies, voluntary and business groups.

Western Power Distribution, the UK’s largest electricity distributor, responsible for delivering power to homes through lines and cables in Devon, is launching a £500,000 fuel poverty fund to help families heat their homes this winter.

Three years of Exe Estuary wildlife refuges are working

The two wildlife refuges were set-up three years ago to ask all visitors to avoid these areas at certain times of the year: all year round off Dawlish Warren and between 15th September and 31st December at Exmouth Duckpond.

IoD appoints Steve Hill as South West chair

The Institute of Directors (IoD) has appointed Steve Hill to lead its South West region.

Steve was formerly vice-chair and succeeds Muir Macdonald, following the completion of Muir’s three-year term as chair.
