Ikea in discussions with Exeter Council over site for new store

Rumours and rumblings about the potential arrival of Swedish giant IKEA to Exeter's growing list of big name retailers have rumbled on for years - in 2001 plans to open a store failed because the City Council was unable to identify a site of sufficient size to satisfy the retail giant's needs.

However, we could well be moving a step closer to this becoming reality. It is now believed that a site near Sandy Park and opposite Tesco has been identified as of a sufficient size and therefore the preferred site following discussions with Exeter City Council.

South Hams pub in UK’s top 50 places to eat

The Millbrook Inn at South Pool in South Devon has been celebrating having recently been named as one of the top 50 gastropubs across the entire UK.

The prestigious list is organised by the Morning Advertiser and judged by 500 voters, including celebrity chefs, pub guide editors, food lovers and industry trade chefs.

Just three pubs in Devon were included on the list with the Millbrook Inn joined by the Jack in the Green at Rockbeare and the Masons Arms at Knowstone.

Friends of Michelle Conroy gather to say farewell

On Sunday afternoon, friends of Michelle Conroy gathered outside the St Petrock’s Centre on the Cathedral Green to say their goodbyes. Michelle was the young homeless person who was killed by a falling tree during the storms last week.

About 50 people were present, most of them from Michelle’s ‘street family’. One friend sang a song and then prayers were led by Canon Anna Norman-Walker from the Cathedral. Everyone was then invited to write a few words in a book of remembrance. This will be in St Petrock’s this coming week and then sent to Michelle’s family in the Channel...

Tributes paid to 21-year-old homeless lady killed in storms

The woman killed by a tree in last week's storms was today named. Although formal identification is not due until tomorrow (30th November) today's Express & Echo newspaper named the 21-year-old as Michelle Conroy.

Police were called to the scene after a report that a tree that had fallen on Western Way, near to the junction with Barnfield Road in Exeter. The tree was reported to have landed on or near to three people.

On police arrival at the scene three casualties were confirmed. One person was trapped and receiving treatment and two others...

City Council expresses sympathy to relatives and friends of homeless woman killed by a falling tree

Exeter City Council has expressed its sympathy to relatives and friends of the woman killed by a falling tree at the weekend.

As reported by The Exeter Daily, a 21-year-old woman, who the police are hoping to official identify today, was killed on Saturday night when a tree fell on the tent that she was sleeping in Western Way, Exeter.

Councillor Rob Hannaford, Lead Councillor for Housing and Community Involvement, said: "This is a tragic death and our thoughts go out to everyone who knew this lady.

"The number of homeless people is unfortunately high in Exeter....
