The TaxPayers’ Alliance comes to Exeter to support local campaigners appalled at the council’s proposed expenditure of £20m of taxpayers’ money on a city centre swimming pool that no one really wants. "It has all the elements of a classic white elephant," says the Taxpayers’ Alliance South West spokesman Tim Newark, looking down on the bus station site from a nearby multi-storey car park.

"We are a national grassroots organisation dedicated to fighting a War on Waste, our current campaign, and in an age of austerity when there are so many demands on public money, the thought of...

UK retail is finally beginning to show the signs of economic recovery with a rise in the number of businesses renting premises in the South of England. In a survey conducted by the Royal Institute of Charted Surveyors (RICS) showed that those surveyed are reporting a rising demand in retail spaces. Exeter City Centre Manager, John Harvey has welcomed the news: “This is another encouraging signal that we appear to be in a period of recovery. “Exeter is definitely ahead of the...

Warm welcome for RAF Brize Norton despite the drizzle

All eyes were turned to the skies in Exeter this lunchtime (Monday 21 October) when a four-engined Hercules Transporter aircraft made a low level fly past over Exeter to mark the start of the Freedom of the City ceremony for RAF Brize Norton. Despite the poor visibility, meaning that it was only visible for moments before disappearing into low cloud, and the constant drizzle of rain, the fly past was warmly cheered by a slightly damp but enthusiastic crowd.

Over 100 serving Airmen from RAF Brize Norton, accompanied by the Band of the RAF Regiment, marched through Exeter city centre...

This City's Centre: Your Perspective

Exeter city centre residents are needed for an ambitious art project that will result in a video installation at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) this summer and provide inspiration for performances around the city later in the year.

The result will be a contemporary portrait of an English rural city that explores the tensions between public, private and privatised public spaces...

South West Water will be able to carry out repairs to a collapsed sewer in Exeter ahead of schedule after Devon County Council helped bring forward the start of work.

Contractor May Gurney had been preparing to undertake work on the collapsed sewer in Holloway Street, but repairs were delayed as the site is immediately adjacent to an ancient masonry arch structure, which is a Scheduled Monument, laying deep under the highway.

The structure, which was originally built as a bridge dating from before the construction of Exeter Cathedral, has been inspected by Devon County...

Exeter city centre manager John Harvey will be submitting a full report on the successful opening of John Lewis yesterday. Although there were a few 'teething problems' mainly to do with water flooding the lower ground floor, and insufficient water pressure in the 4th floor restaurant the day is being described as a resounding success for the whole city centre. Mr Harvey is extremely optimistic for an increasingly busy weekend.
