Appeal to green-fingered Exeter residents

The Stoke Hill Community Association is appealing for green-fingered residents to pitch-in and help create a new community garden in the imposing grounds of St Katherine’s Priory on the 26-27 September.

The project, which is backed by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), will be part of an open weekend at the Priory designed to bring the community together to share existing skills, learn new ones and turn an area of grey to green as part of the national Greening Grey Britain campaign.

Following a police search of a commercial premises in the Dawlish area an assortment of power and garden tools have been found.

These are suspected to be stolen property from burglaries that have taken place in the last few months.

If anyone recognises any of the items pictured or believes some of this property could be theirs, please contact Newton Abbot CID on 01626 326273 quoting Operation Jack.

How safe is your shed?

Most people use their shed to store garden equipment, bicycles and even expensive power tools. Yet, often, sheds are fitted with inadequate locks, or no lock at all.

Since June last year, over seventy-one victims in South Devon had their sheds broken into and property stolen. Almost half of these occurred in Teignbridge.

Fourteen sheds were broken into in Torquay and twelve across Ivybride and Kingsbridge. The areas reporting the fewest number of break-ins were Totnes, Dartmouth, Paignton and Brixham.

Exeter school’s wildlife garden gets new lease of life

Volunteers from EDF Energy have helped Devon Wildlife Trust improve a wildlife garden at an Exeter school, as part of the ongoing Exeter Wild City project.

The garden at Stoke Hill Infants School now has much improved disabled access while new homes have been created for wildlife including beetles, newts and frogs.

With evidence suggesting the lungworm parasite, which can be potentially fatal for dogs, is spreading across the UK, a nationwide ecological experiment called the ‘The Big Snail Count’ is launching to help pet owners recognise the link between mollusc activity in their gardens and the risk of lungworm to their pet.
